Americans throw away over 25% of prepared food each year, resulting in 96 billion pounds of food waste.  Learn to put it to use instead of to waste.  By composting, you can reduce the amount of household waste going into landfills and create nutrient rich soil to fertilize your garden.  You will learn about the decomposers that make composting possible, about different methods for creating compost, and make your own vermicomposter (worm bin) to get you started.  We will also go on a short hike to explore our native decomposers.

Groundwater Model Demonstration

with Randy Mell

Wednesday, August 11th from 7-8pm - Adults Only

Groundwater is an important natural resource. In Wisconsin, the majority of citizens use ground water as their only drinking water supply. Groundwater is also used for agricultural irrigation, watering livestock, industry, and more. In many places, ground water discharges to the surface as springs and serves as the base flow for our cold water streams. Groundwater importance results, in part, from its widespread availability and use. Although Wisconsin has a major groundwater supply, there are areas within the state where large withdrawals for irrigation have resulted in water level declines, and contamination from manmade chemicals has been found in most groundwater resources. As a result of an increasing number of water quality problems, there is a growing concern about protecting the quality of our groundwater supplies, along with conserving our available supply. This groundwater demonstration allows you to see how groundwater moves below our feet, and understand how man’s activities on the surface affect water quality.
