The city of La Crosse is a community rich in history and also in its ethnic make up. This can be attributed to the Mississippi River and its effect on the early local economy, which drew large amounts of immigrants to the region.

Both photos were taken in La Crosse at the turn of the century.

Shortly after Nathan Myrick established his trading post on the banks of the Mississippi River British and Irish immigrants began settling in the region. Shortly after the first Europeans began settling in the region around La Crosse, large numbers of German and Scandinavian immigrants made there way to the La Crosse region.
