Creating the first permanent settlements in La Crosse, the Oneota were able to live a sedentary lifestyle because of their agricultural subsistence. Oneota houses were built to last rather than the easily dismantled homes of the nomadic peoples before them. These dwellings were relatively larger, more stable and provided better protection from the elements than moveable structures. Oneota settlements were densely populated villages with many different extended families in each community. This type of lifestyle also allowed for the flourishing of culture and art. In the La Crosse area, notable Oneota sites include Valley View Mall, Gundersen Lutheran Hospital, and State Road Coulee.
